If Barthes, along with Bachelard, is one of those who have done most to enrich criticism during the last thirty years, it is not as a theoretician of a still hazy semiology, but as the champion of a new pleasure in reading.

About This Quote

Roland Barthes, who died in 1980, at first glance seems to have little in common with Bachelard, who died in 1962. Yet, the two theorists were close friends and worked together on a number of projects. Bachelard considered Barthes "the best critic" and said that "he can understand perfectly my critical tendencies." For his part, Barthes was deeply influenced by the ideas of the French literary critic Claude Lévi-Strauss (1908-2009), who was also one of Bachelard's closest friends.
